La Sunrise × SEAQUAL: From Marine Litter to Swimsuit

A sunrise over the sea: orange catching light, pink stretching out, then the deep blue of the water. That image gave La Sunrise its name and its colours, our limited edition of 50 pieces. For this one, we wanted to go further: a yarn that gives new life to plastic waste, including waste recovered from the sea.

Key points

  • A capsule of 50 pieces, with no restock
  • A fabric made with SEAQUAL® YARN, a 100% recycled polyester
  • Concrete support for the collection of marine litter

Why the sea matters to us

Our swimsuits are made for swimming: in the pool, but also in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean or the North Sea. Nobody wants to swim in water where bottles and abandoned nets are floating. For us, taking care of yourself and taking care of the water go together.

From the start, our swimsuits have incorporated recycled fibres, as we explain on our materials and commitments page. With La Sunrise, we are taking a step further: its polyester is entirely recycled, and it includes plastic recovered from the sea.

What is SEAQUAL INITIATIVE?

SEAQUAL INITIATIVE brings together fishermen, volunteers, manufacturers and brands around one goal: removing plastic waste from the oceans before it breaks down into microplastics, and giving it a second life.

The waste is collected at sea and on beaches, then sorted. Metal and glass go through conventional recycling. The plastic is cleaned and turned into SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC, then into a polymer, and finally into yarn: SEAQUAL® YARN.

From marine litter to swimsuit: marine plastic, polymer, yarn, then La Sunrise.

Did you know?

SEAQUAL® YARN contains a tracer that makes it possible to check for the presence of marine plastic in the fabric. Each fabric receives a SEAQUAL certification number, and the yarn is certified OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 and GRS.

What is really in the yarn

We would rather say it clearly. SEAQUAL® YARN is a 100% recycled polyester: around 10% marine plastic and 90% recycled plastic from bottles collected on land. So this is not a swimsuit made only from waste recovered at sea, but an entirely recycled yarn that includes marine plastic and supports its collection.

La Sunrise’s fabric combines this yarn (85%) with elastane (15%), essential for the swimsuit to hold, follow your movements and keep its shape. It is lined with our signature pink tulle, made from recycled polyamide.

A gradient that took more than a year

In a photo, a gradient looks simple. On a swimsuit, it is one of the hardest effects to get right. It took us more than a year of development, in three main stages.

  1. The fabricAt least five fabric trials, each time with a colouring process chosen to limit its impact, until the colours blended without any visible break.
  2. Cut and coverageThen adjusting the cut and the coverage, fitting after fitting, to keep the support and the look of an ikonō swimsuit.
  3. TransparencyThe hardest part: once wet, a coloured fabric can reveal what lies beneath. Nothing of the construction, not the seams, the cups or the pockets, could show in the water.

A real headache to develop, we won’t pretend otherwise. But it was what it took for La Sunrise to look as beautiful wet as dry.

La Sunrise, a sunrise to wear

La Sunrise takes the sporty cut of La Nageuse: wide adjustable straps, wire-free support, a soft full lining, fabric resistant to chlorine and salt water. Its invisible pockets hold one, two or no prosthesis. Designed in Brussels, made in Spain.

Its gradient moves from orange to pink, then to deep blue, like the sky as the sun rises out of the water. We made 50 pieces, and there will be no restock.

The Sunrise pareo, the finishing touch

To go with it, we created the Sunrise pareo: an OEKO-TEX® certified tulle veil in the same colours, which ties as a skirt, a dress or a wrap. Claire, ikonō’s founder, wears it tied as a dress, by the water.

Carrying it further

A swimsuit lasts longer when you take care of it, and that is still the best way to limit its impact.

  • Rinse it in clean water after every swim.
  • Wash it at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, with little detergent.
  • Dry it flat, in the shade, never in the tumble dryer.
  • Consider a washing bag designed to catch microfibres, as for all synthetic textiles.

Your questions

What is SEAQUAL INITIATIVE?

An initiative that brings together fishermen, volunteers, manufacturers and brands to remove plastic waste from the oceans and turn it into recycled materials, including SEAQUAL® YARN.

Is La Sunrise made only from marine plastic?

No. Its polyester is a 100% recycled yarn containing around 10% marine plastic and 90% recycled plastic collected on land. It is combined with 15% elastane for support.

Is La Sunrise suitable after a mastectomy?

Yes. Like all our swimsuits, it has invisible pockets for one, two or no prosthesis, and wire-free support.

Will it be restocked?

No. La Sunrise is a limited edition of 50 pieces.

How should I care for it?

Rinse it after every swim, wash it at 30 °C on a delicate cycle and dry it flat, in the shade.

A swimsuit won’t clean the ocean on its own. But every thread that comes from waste rather than oil counts, and we want to keep going in this direction.
